Let's talk about – Word for the Year

I have had a guiding word for my year since I could remember. My second one was bold and I think I was fourteen.

We all make goals and set aspirations for ourselves around this time of year. We’re complex people, but I’ve found that it’s not easy keeping a list of goals in mind all twelve months of the year.

At the same time, our goals can change as the year goes on and we could use a guide to make sure we’re on the right track. That’s why a single word for the year has been so so helpful to me.

What I love about a single word is that it’s memorable and simple, but it can also encompass so so much more.

Last year, for 2019, my word was strong. The main reason behind this choice was that I wanted to strengthen my own personality. I was feeling like I was being influenced by all my new surroundings and I wanted to return to who I was – and make it strong enough that I wouldn’t waver as much in the future.

What I love about a single word is that it’s memorable and simple, but it can also encompass so so much more. In 2019 I wanted to get physically stronger by bringing more exercise into my days. I wanted to strengthen the relationships I had in my life by dedicated more time to those I care about. I can put so much meaning into strong that simply recalling the word recalls all my goals with it too.

I’m still thinking about my word for 2020. The word will often come to me in December or January and if it feels right, that’s the one. Not every word I’ve chosen as resonated or been as supportive as others. Some years I can’t even remember what the word was by September. Even so, the reflection and planning of choosing the word was worth my time.

That’s all to say – take some time this year and choose a word to guide you.
